Therbow School was founded in 1965 by Mrs. Theresa Modupe Bowyer. On the 13th October of that year, two pupils who were twins, Taiwo and Kehinde Adesiyan took their places in the garage of a private house in Circular Road, Zaria and thus was the school born.
Only a few weeks later, the garage was full and Mrs. Bowyer started to look for a larger premises. These were found in what was then Bornu Crescent now known as Crescent Road, in the shape of an upstairs flat providing three classrooms with a compound for the children to play.
However, by the end of 1967, these premises became too small to accommodate the growing number of pupils, so early in 1968, a bungalow with a large plot was purchased on the corner of Rwaff Road and Park Road. The site, which was then occupied by Hamzent Stores, was sold in 1970 when the rapidly expanding School bought the old UAC Staff Club in Liverpool Avenue now known as Theresa Bowyer Road, and this building is still in use for Reception and some of the Nursery classes.
The move to Liverpool Avenue (Theresa Bowyer Road) was the start of another phase for the rapid growth of the school, which by this time, had received permission to operate Primary classes. The population of the school rose from 200 to 500 between 1970 and 1974 and the search for another site resulted in finding the present premises in River Road. The first development on this site, comprised a nine-classroom block constructed in 1979 but between 1980 and 1982 this site was fully developed with more classrooms and specialized buildings.
Permission to open a Secondary Section was obtained in 1989 and the initial intake of 19 students started classes on 14th February, 1989 and there are now about 805 students in the whole section.
All told, Therbow School now has a student population of 1,617 in the Nursery, Primary and Secondary Sections. Further expansion may be limited by the constraints of space and funds but whatever be the case, the School Management is confident of being able to maintain its record of outstanding success in public examinations.
Of Therbow School, it may be said that it has been able to accommodate to the various and numerous changes in education policy over the years and has been able to maintain its policy of offering qualitative education in the private sector at a cost within the reach of almost every pocket.
